Welling United's bad form continued on Saturday when they lost 4-0 away at Hampton & Richmond. Despite a solid first half display from the Wings, the second period saw Welling concede 4 goals and down to ten men.
The first half was one of few clear chances as neither side really dominated play. It was the Wings that went closest in the first ten minutes. Leon Solomon's fierce strike from outside the box flew just inches over the bar with Beavers keeper Matt Lovett almost certainly beaten.
Three minutes later and Hampton could have gone in front. The Wings failed to clear their lines and Ian Hodges almost headed home. At the other end Wings loan-signing Charles Ademeno fired harmlessly wide on 23 minutes before four minutes later Hampton right-back Graham Harper missed the chance of the half. Harper unmarked at the back post, somehow sent his shot over the bar with the goal at his mercy.
Hampton's impressive Shawn McAuley then saw his effort fly over after a sublime passing move. Six minutes before the break and Welling could have taken the lead. Richard Carpenter's corner was flicked on by Chris Moore to John Wilfort but the defender blasted over.
After the break and the game would take a complete turn for the worst for the visitors. The Wings had started the second period brightly before their hard work was undone. Ellis Green went close when the winger shot wide after beating the Beavers defence with excellent skill.
On the 54th minute Jamie Turner was adjudged to have brought down Elliott Godfrey inside the area for a penalty. Godfrey then calmly sent Turner the wrong way to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later and Hampton had doubled their lead and the Wings were down to ten men. The homeside were awarded another penalty with the Welling players seemingly bemused by the decision. Chris Moore was deemed the culprit for Godfrey's tumble and was subsequently sent off for a second yellow, having only been booked moments earlier. Godfrey stepped up and scored his second of the match.
Hampton were now in complete control and it was only a matter of time before they made it
3-0. Their third came five minutes before full-time when Ian Hodges slotted past Turner. Then finally, just to rub salt into Welling's wounds Hodges made it 4-0, after reacting fastest to Turner's parry to bundle the ball home.
Welling will play Grays Athletic in the Setanta Shield on Tuesday 15th January at PVR; however, the game is subject to Grays' FA Trophy result. If Grays draw against York City on Sat, Jan 12, then our game will be postponed and rearranged for a later date.
Come on you Wings!
