Welling United lost 3-1 away at Eastleigh on Saturday in a disappointing defeat at the Silverlake Stadium. Goals from Warren McBean, Mark Marshall and Chris Piper secured the win for Eastleigh. Welling's only goal came from substitute Orlando Smith.

It was the worst possible start for the Wings as they conceded within the first four minutes. Poor defending from Andy Ford's side allowed McBean to latch onto a flick on from Chris Collins and smash the ball into the back of the net from close range.

Despite the early goal, chances for both sides were at a premium. Two comfortable saves for keeper David Wilkinson from Richard Carpenter's free-kick and then Ohran Stewart's effort was all Welling created in the first half.

The Wings were lucky not to have gone in 2-0 down when Eastleigh hit the bar direct from a corner and then moments later forcing Jamie Turner into an excellent save from a well struck free-kick.

After an uninspiring first half display from the visitors, the Wings started the second half brightly. Loan signing Sam Gargan fired over before half-time substitute Orlando Smith equalised. A quick turn from Smith allowed the winger to hit a low shot, which took a slight deflection off a defender to fly past Wilkinson.

However, Welling's joy was short-lived as the homeside quickly regained the lead. Mark Marshall's left wing corner hit the far post and then into the net with Wings keeper Turner stranded. The goal was certainly undeserved as the Wings were by far the better side in the second period.

Nevertheless, Eastleigh scored a third on 78 minutes and made it 3-1 which flattered the south coast side. Chris Piper was the scorer, slotting home into an open net.

Welling welcome Newport County to Park View Road on Wednesday, kick-off 7.45pm.

Come on you Wings!
