On the back of last weekend's win at Hayes & Yeading, Boss Neil Smith was looking for his first win at Park View Road against Dorchester Town on a sunny Saturday afternoon. However, it wasn’t to be for the new manager as the game ended 1-1. Omari Coleman’s first half goal was cancelled out by Jon Docker in the second half.
It was the home side that had the better of the first period, creating far more chances than their opponents. Omari Coleman had an early strike saved and 20 minutes later the Wings should have really taken the lead. Leon Solomon's throw was headed on for Adam Cottrell who unmarked, fired wide when he should really have hit the target.
Dorchester's Charlie Henry was their only player causing the Wings problems and the young midfielder nearly set-up the opening goal. His deflected shot found Jamie Cummings where the defender's shot was excellently parried away for a corner by Jamie Turner.
Cottrell was again close to giving his side the lead but the young midfielder couldn't get enough power on his shot from Sam Keevil's cross.
Nicky Ward had an effort fly over the bar before Welling deservedly went in front. Richard Carpenter's free-kick was met by the head of Coleman who scored his third goal in four games.
Into the second half and Welling's hard work was undone just three minutes after the restart. A short free-kick caught the Wings defence out and Jon Docker's low shot went through a crowd of bodies into the bottom corner.
It wasn't long before Docker was within inches of adding a second to his tally. Another free-kick from a similar position came back of the post with Turner certainly beaten.
15 minutes before the final whistle Coleman had a thunderbolt of a strike magnificently saved by Darren Behcet.
Further chances for substitute Daniel Maxwell and Coleman went astray before Welling had a penalty shout waved away. A byline free-kick from Carpenter was heading towards Tony Sinclair but on its way the ball looked to have been handled by Elliot Bent, nevertheless the referee played on.
Welling travel to Thurrock on Bank Holiday Monday, a side still looking for their first three points of the new campaign.
Come on you Wings!
