Welling United lost 6-2 against Cambridge City at Park View Road on Saturday. An own goal from Sonny Cobbs, plus goals from Michael Gash, Ashley Fuller, Josh Simpson, Neil Midgley and Lee Roache secured a comfortable win for the Lilywhites. Welling's goals came courtesy of Sam Gargan and Omari Coleman.
New manager Andy Ford was introduced to the Welling faithful before kick-off but his managerial debut at PVR was a real baptism of fire. It was the worst possible start for the Wings as they conceded within five minutes. A harmless ball into the box from Josh Simpson was put into his own net by Sonny Cobbs.
Things wouldn't get much better for Welling as they were 2-0 down ten minutes later. Michael Gash hit a low free-kick past Jamie Turner and into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
However, Andy Ford's side did pull one back on 24 minutes. Ellis Green's cross was met by the head of Sam Gargan to score his first for the club. Moments later Richard Carpenter nearly equalised for the Wings when his free-kick just shaved the outside of the post.
Cambridge continued to look dangerous and would score their third of the afternoon 34 minutes in. A poor clearance by Joe Howe found Ashley Fuller to power home a left foot shot into the back of the net.
Welling started the second half brightly and when substitute Omari Coleman made it 3-2 a come back looked on the cards. Gargan set-up Coleman to hit an excellent curling shot past Ashley Timms.
However, the last 15 minutes of the match saw the Wings fall apart. A deflected shot off Chris Moore from Josh Simpson made it 4-2 before Neil Midgley side footed past Turner to make it 5-2. Then just to rub salt into the already deep Welling wounds Lee Roache made it 6-2 from close range.
Welling welcome Newport County in Blue Square South action at Park View Road on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.

Extracts from Interview:
"It could have been a better debut, sometimes with the momentum of a new manger coming in it gives a bit of impetus to the players. Very disappointed with the result. When we got back into it at 3-2 I thought we had a bit of momentum. I was quite pleased at that stage but the fourth goal was the killer. The last 15 minutes, it was like trying to run a car with no petrol; their fitness levels were very poor. It was the last 20 minutes that really disappointed me today.
I won't stand for people feeling sorry for themselves. Players are needed; the squad is not big enough at the moment. We do need new faces and I will be working on that over the next week to ten days. Rome wasn't built in a day, we haven't got a great deal of time to turn things around but we need to get some points on the board."
