Welling United lost 2-1 away at Braintree Town on Saturday. The Wings dominated the game and did not deserve to leave empty-handed. Nevertheless, a penalty from Bradley Quinton gave Braintree the lead. Sonny Cobbs then equalised for Welling just two minutes into the second half but with 20 minutes left on the clock Quinton fired home a free-kick and secured the win for the Iron.
Braintree were quickest out of the blocks, threatening inside a minute of kick-off. A quick passing move nearly saw Richard Jolly score but Wings defender Robbie Ryan was on hand to clear the ball off the line. From here on in, the Wings were in total control and the homeside rarely threatened.
Daniel Nwanze came closest to scoring for the visitors. Nwanze struck an effort over the bar before having a header deflected wide. Yet despite controlling possession, the Wings failed to create any clear-cut chances. Then with five minutes remaining until half-time, Max Ellison-Hustwick brought down Bradley Quinton inside the box for a penalty. The fouled player stepped up and slotted the spot-kick past Wings keeper Steve Williams.
Welling did have one last opportunity to go in level but Richard Carpenter shot low and wide.
After the break and the visitors returned with renewed vigour and quickly drew level. A neat interchange of passes between Sam Gargan and Sonny Cobbs, allowed the latter to strike the ball low past Nicky Morgan to make it 1-1. The Wings continued to put pressure on Braintree and were playing some excellent football at times.
Cobbs was unlucky not to have scored his second on the hour mark. From outside the area, Cobbs hit a vicious shot, which was superbly tipped over by Morgan in the Iron goal.
However, with only their third effort on goal all game Braintree restored their lead. A debatable free-kick was curled round the wall and past the helpless Williams into the back of the net.
An abundance of late corners for the Wings proved fruitless and the game ended in an underserved defeat for the travelling side.
Welling welcome Eastbourne Borough to Park View Road on Monday, kick-off 3.00 pm.
