Welling United won 2-1 against Bishop's Stortford in the final home game of the season. Sonny Cobbs gave the Wings the lead with a cracking goal on 18 minutes. Danny Harris equalised for the Bishops on 26 minutes but Orlando Smith scored the winner for the homeside five minutes later.
Chances were at a premium in the first half but the 18th minute goal from Sonny Cobbs was well worth the wait. The on-loan midfielder hit a stunning shot from all of 25-yards with the goalkeeper left standing, as the ball flew into the top corner.
Bishop's Stortford were still in a with a chance of securing a playoff spot if they could beat Welling and with this in their minds they quickly drew level. An inswinging free-kick from Ahmed Deen eluded Jamie Turner and seemed to take a touch off Danny Harris before finding the net.
The visitors could have taken the lead moments later. Harris was denied his second of the evening when Robbie Ryan cleared his shot off the line.
However, in a fast paced game the Wings quickly had the ball down the other end and put themseleves in front. Orlando Smith scored his fifth of the season after Bishops keeper Joe Welch failed to hold onto the ball when under pressure from Sam Gargan.
Jamie Turner had to make a final save before the half-time interval when Loui Fazackerley hit a low shot towards the bottom corner.
After the break and the Wings had a penalty appeal turned down when Michael Kamara seemed to be fouled inside the box. Bishops substitute Greg Pearson saw his effort well saved by Turner on the hour mark before Kamara was forced to clear a shot off the line.
Fazackerley had a great opportunity to equalise late on for the Bishops. The midfielder did all the hard work of beating two Wings defenders but the former Leyton man dragged his shot wide and with it any chance of over turning Welling's lead.
Welling now top the form guide, as Andy Ford's side have secured 19 points in the last 8 matches. Certainly a great achievement for the players and management considering the Wings position only a few months ago!
Welling travel to Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday in the final game of the 2007-2008 campaign.
Come on you Wings!
