Neil Smith and Welling United were hoping to put Monday's defeat at Thurrock behind them with a result against second place Bath City. Loan signing, goalkeeper Clark Masters was handed his debut for the Wings whilst Richard Carpenter, Lloyd Blackman and Daniel Maxwell were all back in the starting 11 after being rested or on the bench in the last match respectively.

The newly promoted Bath City had the vast majority of the possession in the first period, however the Romans failed to create any clear-cut chances. Subsequently it was the home side that had the better of the opportunities.

The WSU's player of the month, Omari Coleman went close on 17 minutes when the striker hit a low shot just wide into the side netting. Minutes later and Coleman was again involved, when his free-kick was deflected wide of the left post.

36 minutes in and Leon Solomon nearly scored what would have been goal of the season. The full-back fired a thunderbolt of a strike from outside the area which flew just inches wide of the top right corner.

After the break and it was the visitors’ turn to attack and go agonisingly close to taking the lead. Paul Keddle had a looping shot well saved by Clark Masters a minute into the second half.

On the hour mark and the Romans went ever closer to going in front. David Gilroy played Bath striker Darren Edwards into space and from just outside the box Edwards hit a low shot which rebounded off the post.

Against the run of play and Welling should have taken the lead. Coleman's teasing cross found Nicky Ward free just yards out but the striker fired over the bar.

With 20 minutes left on the clock Bath again hit the woodwork. Lewis Hogg's excellent run from his own half allowed the midfielder to pull the ball back for Edwards who saw his shot canon off the bar.

With lady luck seemingly favouring Welling, the home side won the match just a minute before the final whistle. After a battling and hard fought match it was a deserved winner when Tony Sinclair headed home Richard Carpenter's cross.

Welling travel to Lewes on Friday and Neil Smith will be hoping today’s result can kick start his sides season.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from Interview:

"We knew it was going to be hard, they are obviously on a roll after getting promotion then being top of the table. But that's what we are about at the moment; we seem to be playing well against the better sides. What I asked for on Thursday and today, was a response from our performance on Monday. The boys kept believing in themselves and what a great way to win the game with Tony coming in at the far post, superb.

I would just like to dedicate that one to the supporters, who have been coming and travelling, and seeing us trying to do the right thing. We came off on Monday and they were clapping us off, telling us to keep our heads up, that’s fantastic I can't ask for any more than that."
