Fisher Athletic v Welling
Welling United thumped Fisher Athletic 5-0 on Bank Holiday Monday. It was a perfect afternoon for the Wings in the sunshine at Champion Hill Stadium. Goals from Andrews, Johnson, Protheroe, Hurrell and Sheringham secured Welling’s biggest league win of the season.
It took the visitors only ten minutes to take the lead against the already relegated Fisher. A Welling corner saw Tony Sinclair’s header saved on the line before Graeme Andrews scrambled the ball home from close range.
Just two minutes later, the Wings doubled their lead. Ryan Johnson headed in Sanchez Ming’s pinpoint cross.
Fisher rarely threatened but did force Charlie Mitten into one excellent save midway through the half.
Welling missed a hatful of chances as the half progressed and even squandered a penalty when Charlie Sheringham fired wide from the spot.
After the break Lee Protheroe added a third to the Welling tally with an excellent curling shot from the edge of the area.
Sam Hurrell scored his second Wings goal in style on 62 minutes. He ran rings round the Fisher defence before unleashing an unstoppable strike from outside the box.
Moments later, Wings keeper Charlie Mitten had to be taken off after going down injured and was replaced by David Wilkinson.
For the second time in the game, Sanchez Ming was bundled over inside the area but this time Sheringham made no mistake and slotted home the penalty.
Next up for the Wings is the Kent Senior Cup Final at Park View Road on Thursday, against Whitstable Town, kick-off 7.45pm.
