Welling v Weymouth
Welling United cruised through to the Second Round of the FA Trophy after a 2-0 win over Weymouth. Goals from Charlie Sheringham and Moses Ademola means the Wings will travel to Hednesford Town in the next stage of the cup.
However, it was not the best start to the night for the homeside. During the pre-match warm-up Ryan Johnson broke down and was taken to hospital. We all wish him well and hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.
Once the game was underway the Wings came flying out of the blocks and took the lead within 60 seconds of kick-off. Charlie Sheringham scored his 11th goal of the season after knocking the ball home past the stranded Danny Knowles.
The Terras almost had an immediate reply when Chris McPhee fired wide when found unmarked at the back post.
18 minutes in and Moses Ademola doubled Welling’s lead. From the edge of the area the striker smashed the ball low into the bottom corner, for his first goal in a Welling shirt.
Weymouth’s Jordan Collins was stretchered off on 20 minutes with what is a suspected broke angle and again we all wish him well and hope he makes a speedy recovery.
Sheringham should have increased his tally two minutes later when the striker glanced his header agonisingly wide. Clark Masters was forced into making a brilliant save moments later as Weymouth were desperately looking for a way back into the match.
Nevertheless, it was the Wings that looked the more dangerous. Lee Blackburn had two chances in quick succession 30 minutes in. First the midfielder's free-kick was tipped over before his delicate shot-come-cross grazed the top of the bar.
Into the second half and Welling continued where they left off. Sheringham mistimed a header and Sanchez Ming had an effort fly over.
Ming and Ademola linked well on the hour mark but the pair saw an intricate passing move end with the on-loan striker dragging wide from an acute angle.
The closest Weymouth looked to scoring was towards the end of the 90 minutes when the visitors hit the crossbar but the Wings very rarely looked threatened against the Blue Square Premier side.
