A dire first half for the homeside saw Newport in total control as the Wings offered very little in attack. It took the visitors 14 minutes to take the lead. Richard Evans' free-kick was deflected into his own net by Che Stadhart.
The Exiles doubled their lead 10 minutes later. Julian Alsop slipped in Matt Green who finished well past Jamie Turner. Newport were unlucky not to have added a third when Ian Hillier fired just wide of the mark from 30 yards out.
The second period was a much better affair for the Wings as they came racing out of the blocks. Welling pulled one back when Newport keeper Mark Ovendale dropped Jamie Day’s corner into his own net just minutes after the restart.
Just two minutes later the home crowd were again celebrating as the Wings were back on level terms. Danny Kedwell nodded Ben Lewis’ highball on where Matt Bodkin saw his shot come back off the post for Steve Harper who tapped home.
Kedwell then saw his effort fly over before Newport were awarded a debatable free-kick on the half way line. The set-piece found Paul Cochlin who smashed the ball into the roof of the net to give the Exiles the lead again.
Jamie Day had a last minute chance to rescue a point but the Wings captain volleyed agonisingly wide.
Welling travel to 12th placed Cambridge City next Saturday looking to bounce back with a win against the Lilywhites.

Extracts from the Interview:
"The first half killed us; we just weren’t at the races first half, which was very disappointing. The second half we were much better and to be fair they have spent a lot of money and that was a marker for me. I think we can compete with anyone in this league and really do believe that we can do very well this year.
We gave away two silly free-kicks and we just didn’t deal with the second ball. Apart from that I have to praise the lads, as we had a very hard game on Tuesday. I was disappointed that we lost don’t get me wrong but I took a lot out of that and very proud of the boys second half especially."
