The Wings started the game the brighter of the two sides, causing the Rooks a few early scares. Just four minutes in and it was last seasons top scorer for the Wings who went close to opening his 2006/07 account.
A Keith Rowland corner was met by the head of Steve Perkins but his effort looked to be heading wide before Che Stadhart chased the loose ball. Stadhart pulled the ball back from the byline for Kedwell who smashed his shot just over the bar.
No less than 3 minutes later and a sublime move from the impressive Stadhart allowed the striker to turn and hook his shot inches over. Surprisingly Stadhart was given the offside flag much to the amazement of the Wings fans.
Despite this early pressure it was the homeside that took the lead on 13 minutes. A cleared Lewes corner was swung in by Dean Hooper, which was met, by a looping header from Ian Simpemba, giving Jamie Turner no chance in the Welling goal.
The best player on the pitch for Welling United, Che Stadhart, helped create the Wings' equaliser on 22 minutes. Again he was chasing down a loose ball before the striker was brought down by Lewis Cook's challenge inside the box. Kedwell stepped up to convert the spot-kick sending Paul Wilkerson the wrong way.
With Welling back on level terms the home side increased the pressure desperately looking to regain the lead before the break. The Wings defence was again caught with a Lewes set piece. A high ball found Jean-Michel Sigere unmarked in the Wings area but the former Gravesend & Northfleet striker headed wide of the goal.
The Lewes fans wouldn't have to wait long for the Rooks to retake the lead, as the ex-Wings striker Paul Booth made it 2-1 a minute after the restart. Sigere broke free of the chasing defenders to cross for Booth who tapped the ball home from close range.
Lewes were certainly showing their credentials as promotion candidates, running the Wings defence ragged. With fast sweeping moves from defence to attack it was only a matter of time before the Rooks increased their lead.
Just after the hour mark and Lewes made it 3-1. Provider turned goal-scorer Sigere was left free to place his shot into the bottom corner. The Wings went close to clawing the game back when Chris Moore headed against the post but this attack left Welling exposed leaving Jamie Cade to net the fourth.
Welling did pull one back 2 minutes into injury time when a deflected Andrew Sam shot cannoned into the net.
Welling travel to Eastleigh on Saturday, hoping to repeat last seasons 3-1 victory against the south coast side.
Come on you Wings!
