The day the fans had been waiting for had finally arrived. Huddersfield Town v Welling United in the FA Cup First Round Sunday 6 November 2005. The excitement had been building for weeks with all kinds of Media Coverage adding to the hype.
Adrian Pennock was without Steve Perkins, Lee Gledhill and James Pinnock all due to injury. Matt Carruthers started for the first time since early October by replacing Matt Bodkin.
Both sides took awhile to get going but the first chance of the game fell to the Home side on ten minutes. Danny Adams hit the ball first time 30 yards out but luckily for the Wings the ball safely flew past Jamie Turner's right hand post. Minutes later and it was Welling's first chance of the afternoon. A Matt Carrurthers free kick was swung into the path of Chris Moore who headed just over the bar.
Huddersfield then had two great chances to take an early lead after a cross from Danny Schofield eluded Jamie Turner and had to be cleared off the line by Leon Solomon. Moments later Turner produced a good save to deny Gary Taylor-Fletcher and the Terriers the lead. Welling were playing extremely deep in order to keep the League 1 side at bay but the Wings nearly caught Huddersfield on the break. A Carruthers through pass put Che Stadhart one on one with keeper Paul Rachubka but the Town defence managed to track back and make a superb challenge on Stadhart to deny him an effort on goal.
It took Huddersfield Town nearly 30 minutes to break down the Wings defence. A dubious Huddersfield free kick was deflected clear for a corner. The resulting corner was met by Andy Booth who rose above everyone to head home from 6 yards out. Huddersfield then had further chances to double their lead as Adams, Booth and Brandon all had efforts either blocked or well saved by Jamie Turner. The halftime score line reflected how difficult Welling were making it for the League 1 side as they went into the break only 1-0 down.
However, it didn't take long for Huddersfield to double their lead. Three minutes into the second half Matt Lee brought down Chris Brandon in the penalty area and the Terriers were awarded a penalty. Danny Schofield confidently stepped up and slotted the ball past Jamie Turner to make it 2-0.
Turner who was fast becoming Welling's star player made yet another sensational save by denying Taylor-Fletcher from close range. 20 minutes from the end and Andy Booth scored his second of the match. Booth who seemed to be in an offside position latched onto the end of a long pass and volleyed home to make it 3-0.
Some good work from both Matt Bodkin and Rob Owen allowed Danny Kedwell to hit a fierce shot just over the bar. Andy Holdsworth made it 4-0 with ten minutes left on the clock, Holdsworth hit a low shot past Turner into the bottom corner.
Despite the score line Welling never gave up and deserved a consolation goal in the 81st minute. A Jamie Day free kick was met by the head of Chris Moore who nodded the ball past the helpless Rachubka. This gave the loyal Wings fans who had travelled to Huddersfield in their hundreds something to celebrate. All credit must go to the fans for their fantastic support throughout the match.
Despite the result the Welling United players can be pleased with their performance as they battled hard and showed real character against such tough opposition. This great occasion can be yet another proud moment to be added to the Welling United Football Club history.
