Welling United welcomed Hayes on the last day of the 2006- 2007 season. It was a must win game for both sides, Welling had a slight chance of making the playoffs if results went their way and Hayes had to win to avoid relegation. The game at Park View Road was also the last for the Wings management team of Adrian Pennock and Phil Handford.

Hayes started the brighter of the two sides and created numerous chances. Ryan Ashe had a shot deflected over before Liam Feeney saw his effort well saved by Jamie Turner.

Danny Kedwell had a goal disallowed on 25 minutes when Des Boateng was adjudged to have fouled inside the box. Hayes were by far the better side and deservedly took the lead minutes later. A quick break allowed Feeney to play in Josh Scott, who unmarked slotted home.

Leon Solmon had a chance comfortably saved on 32 minutes but the Wings were below par in the first period.

The second half saw an improved Wings performance but it was still Hayes that had the better of the opportunities. Feeney picked up Ashe’s wayward shot but the striker couldn't quite finish in front of goal.

Further chances for Hayes were squandered when Scott fired wide, allowing Welling to get back into the game. Kedwell had a shot deflected over before Boateng headed the resulting corner wide.

The homeside finally broke through on 80 minutes when substitute Ellis Green's cross found Boateng who smashed the ball past Kevin Davies.

The Wings have Jamie Turner to thank for not ending the season with defeat as the keeper made a number of excellent saves to deny Hayes. A point blank save to stop Kieran Knight and a low smart save from Daniel Dyer's effort kept Welling in the match.

However, arguably his best save of the season came a minute from time. Hayes were awarded a free-kick just outside the area resulting in Chris Moore being sent off for a second bookable offence. Will Hendry's right-footed set piece saw Turner produce a sublime one handed save to turn his shot over.

Hayes were also down to ten men moments later when Sam Tucknott was brought down on the edge of the area and Gilbert Nuako was given his marching orders . Jamie Day's subsequent saved free-kick was the last chance of the game.

After the final whistle the home crowd bid a final farewell to manager Adrian Pennock and his assistant Phil Handford showing their appreciation for their hard work at the club.

So until next season, thank you for taking the time to visit the website and supporting Welling United.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from the Interview:
"It was exciting. We looked very, very tired. It's been a great season; we are obviously all disappointed we didn’t get in the playoffs. It brought a lump in my throat to be honest with you. I've enjoyed it immensely.

You just have to look back from where we came from. We were third from bottom and we have come a long way. That is all credit to the players and I've had a fantastic coaching staff. Massive credit has to go to Phil, which I have said millions of times before but I will keep saying it. Just fantastic memories. Obviously we had downs this year with Graham, god bless him. But the fans have been very special to me."
