Welling were quick out of the blocks, taking the lead just five minutes into the game. The Wings first corner of the game was headed back across goal by Danny Kedwell where Chris Moore headed home from close range.
The Wings should have doubled their lead on 20 minutes when another Jamie Day corner caused the Grays defence all sorts of problems. Gavin Poole blocked Perkins’ header on the line before his second effort went inches wide.
The current holders of the cup Grays, equalised on 34 minutes through Gavin Grant. From 30-yards Grant's low drive flew past the diving Paul Hyde into the bottom corner.
The Wings went close to regaining the lead just before the break. Kedwell's hopeful ball across the box found Day but Ashley Bayes made a smart stop to deny the Wings captain.
After a battling first half display from the homeside the second period saw a renewed vigour and penetration from Grays.
The Wings held their own for more than 20 minutes before Grays finally broke through to take the lead. Paul Hyde couldn't quiet get enough on Glenn Poole's header and the former Thurrock man scored his fifth of the campaign.
The visitors added a third in controversial style just four minutes later. A long ball from the Grays defence looked to have gone out of play but John Martin caught the Wings out of position to put his side 3-1 up.
Stuart Thurgood made it 4-1 on 86 minutes when he side-footed the ball home.
Despite the result Wings Boss Adrian Pennock was lavish in his praise of his sides performance.
Welling travel to Bognor Regis Town next Saturday to face a side that haven't lost at home in the league since October.
Come on you Wings!

Extracts from the Interview:
"I am proud of the boys for their performance today. I thought first half especially, the second half their extra bit of quality showed, they are obviously full time, train everyday and their fitness showed. Sometimes in football you got to put your hands and say they were the better team and I wish them all the best in the next round. But I am very, very proud of the players.
If you do make mistakes you will be punished, all in all we got to look at it and think positively. First half especially we did ok and I'm very proud of the players. We have to move on now and look forward to staying up there in the league. The players gave the club everything and I thought the crowd was great."
