Welling United extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-1 win over Eastleigh at Park View Road on Saturday. A goal in each half from captain Jamie Day secured the victory for the Wings. Andy Forbes managed to pull one back for the Spitfires but the homeside deservedly held on for the three points.

The visitors had the better of the opening possession but rarely tested Jamie Turner in the Wings goal. The closest Eastleigh came to scoring was a Steve Watts header after 9 minutes, which was comfortably saved by the Welling number 1.

Skipper Jamie Day, who went on to score two, had the opportunity to put his side in front on 14 minutes. Tony Battersby's ball found Day unmarked, but the Welling stalwart only manged to shoot straight at James Pullen. Moments later and it could have been Eastleigh that took the lead. Des Boateng had to clear West's header off the line from Danny Smith's corner.

In a relatively quiet half for both sides it was the homeside that took the lead six minutes before the break. Leon Solomon's superb cross was met by the diving head of Day to score his fourth of the campaign.

After the break and the Wings doubled their lead just seven minutes in. Turner's long ball was cleared by Rob Marshall but only as far as Day who fired the ball low past Pullen.

Eastleigh were unlucky not to have pulled one back when Turner was called into action on 58 minutes. Smith's cross was met by the head of Andy Forbes at the far post but the Wings keeper made a smart stop to deny the former Weymouth man.

With 15 minutes left on the clock the Spitfires broke through . Marshall's long ball was headed on for Forbes to side foot home from close range. Forbes went close to drawing his side level minutes later but the striker fired over.

With time running out the Wings were put under enormous pressure when a number of debatable decisions seemed to go against them. However, the Wings held strong and deservedly secured all three points.

Welling travel to Weston-super-Mare next Saturday, a side fighting against relegation. The Wings will be looking to extend their unbeaten run and cement themselves in the this play off positions.

Come on you Wings!

Extracts from the Interview:
"What a fantastic result for us, when you are up against it and playing against 12 men it is always going to be hard. We had a couple of chances to score and put the game to bed. But I am Very proud of the players. It was two great goals and I'm really pleased for Daisy as he has worked exceptionally hard this year.

A good spell, people were disappointed with the draw again Havant but I was over the moon because of the performance. No one can say we don’t try; we are such an honest team. With that little bit of quality in there, Richard Carpenter has come in and shown his true colours. The back three and its the best I have seen Chris Moore play, Ben Lewis, Steve Perkins, Mark Goodfellow and we are looking more solid. A fantastic result."
