After last weekends narrow victory over Dorchester, Welling were hoping to win a lot more convincingly. Eastleigh haven't won in three and are a side that we probably would have lost to last season! Mark Saunders made his debut for the Wings replacing the suspended Danny Kedwell. Matt Bodkin another new face for the Wings was on the bench.

Eastleigh had the better of the early chances, Andy Forbes going close, but his shot was deflected out for a corner. A few minutes later Eastleigh again went close after Steve Forbes headed just over. However, it wasn't long before Welling's midfield dominated proceedings. The excellent loan signing of Mark Saunders was certainly paying off. Saunders gave the Wings a solid option in midfield allowing Clarke and the rest of the side more creative freedom.

The first major chance came from a Wings corner; the ball was swung in and only required the slightest of touches to end up in the back of the net, but the cross eluded everyone. Mark Saunders went close after hitting a fierce shot, which narrowly went over the bar.

Then surprisingly Lee Gledhill went close for the Wings. The former Gravesend man ran from the halfway line down the right flank skipping past Eastleigh defenders showing sublime control but his effort on goal didn't merit his actions for the build up.

The Wings deservedly took the lead on 26 minutes. A brilliantly worked cross from Adrian Clarke allowed Rob Owen to head the ball past the helpless Scott Tarr. Only ten minutes after Owen's first, he popped up again to score his second. James Pinnock crossed a delightful ball, which Rob Owen headed home with ease.

Two minutes after Owen's second, Welling were three up. Clarke again the provider, as he crossed an inch perfect ball into the box, which Chris Moore headed home.

Second half however, the Wings took their foot off the pedal, which allowed Eastleigh to get back into the game. The Spitfires two substitutions of James Taylor and Tyronne Bowers on the hour mark injected a new lease of lift into the side. Eastleigh were playing a lot better football than they did in the first. Eastleigh were dominating the possession and pressing the Wings back line further into their own half.

Eastleigh then deservedly pulled one back 15 minutes from time. David Hughes hit a super 30-yard screamer past the helpless Turner into the top right corner.

Both Steve Perkins and James Pinnock had late chances, which narrowly missed the target. Matt Bodkin came on during stoppage time but didn't have enough time to establish himself in the match.

Despite the disappointing second half, Welling deservedly went home with all three points. Wings continue to lie in fourth and are unbeaten on their away travels, something I'm sure all Wings fans hope will continue.
