Wing's Boss Adrian Pennock made just the one change to the team that beat Basingstoke Town 3-2 at Park View Road last Saturday, with Midfielder Rob Owen returning to the squad and James Pinnock starting on the bench.
In freezing conditions, Welling could have been in front after only a few minutes when a Danny Kedwell shot was deflected wide for a corner. However, only 15 minutes later Carshalton took the lead after a good passing move from the home side opened up the Wing's defence, putting Tony Quinton through for a deflected shot past keeper Jamie Turner.
The Wing's worked hard to pull a goal back with another chance falling to Kedwell who shot just over the bar on 23 minutes, but the Robins maintained the advantage and in response created two chances of their own which were cleared off the Welling line.
With neither side dominating, the Wing's finished the first half brightly but could not take advantage of some late possession and attempts at goal from Che Stadhart. These included an acrobatic volley which flew just over the cross bar and a fierce low shot which was well saved by Robin's goalkeeper Adam Federici.
With Welling keen to secure 3 points to position them back in the play-off pack, the night was one of frustration for the travelling away supporters as the Wing's could not break down an industrious Carshalton side, who had only last month beaten leaders Weymouth.
With Welling continually searching for an equaliser, Carshalton often found the Wing's defence exposed which nearly led to the home side doubling their lead around the hour mark.
Further chances for both James Pinnock and Matt Bodkin would go begging and even with keeper Jamie Turner going up for corners the Wings simply could not manage to equalise against the bottom side.
With 3 points lost, Welling United's play-off push must get back on track with a win on Saturday against Eastleigh, but to achieve this Pennock's team will need to raise their game and get back to winning ways.
Come on you Wings!
