Welling United kicked-off the first of three games in a week with a disappointing 2-1 defeat away at Braintree Town on Tuesday evening. Jamie Day gave the Wings the lead on 7 minutes but goals from Bertie Brayley and Eugene Ofori secured the win for the Iron and moved the Essex side to fourth in the table.

The Wings started the brighter of the two sides, playing some exquisite football. They could have been in front as early as the fourth minute. Steve Perkins' header took a deflection wide before Ben Lewis fired over from the resulting corner.

Welling deservedly took the lead two minutes later through captain Jamie Day. A free-kick from 30-yards was superbly curled in off the post from Day for his sixth of the season. A chance soon after for Ellis Green was the last attack the Wings would see for some time.

Braintree were allowed back into the game and it wasn't long before they drew level. A defensive mix-up 14 minutes in allowed striker Bertie Brayley to score a soft equaliser.

10 minutes later and Bradley Quinton went close to putting the Iron in front when the defender left Jamie Turner stranded, but his effort cannoned off the post. However, soon after the Wings found themselves behind when Braintree made it 2-1 on 30 minutes. From an unnecessary free-kick Eugene Ofori was able to jump highest to head the ball home.

Despite going behind Welling were inches away from equalising in first half stoppage time. Danny Kedwell did well to win the ball in the corner before crossing for Day who went close with a diving header yards out from goal.

The Wings best opportunities in the second period all came from set pieces. Both Kedwell and Perkins squandered chances from Day's corners. Meanwhile, Braintree again hit the woodwork, but this time it was James Hawes who was denied.

An unsavoury incident towards the end of the match caused some controversy but Welling left Cressing Road wondering what could have been, had they kept up their early momentum.

Next up the Wings play Thurrock FC at Stonebridge Road of Gravesend & Northfleet on Thursday in the second game of an action packed week.

Come on you Wings!
