What a difference a week makes is a phrase often used in football. Well a year in football must seem like a lifetime for Welling United. This time last year Welling were struggling in the bottom three of the Conference South and were dumped out of the FA Cup by Slough Town after a gutless display!

However a year on and The Wings are 3rd in the Conference South and avoided a repeat of an embarrassing cup defeat with a solid 2-0 win at Meadow Park yesterday.

Adrian Pennock made one change to the side that defeated Hayes last week, with Matt Carruthers replacing Mark Saunders.

The Wings started slowly and The Wood showed glimpses of why they sit top of the Southern League Eastern. With Boreham very physical in their approach they could have been 2-0 up within the first 10 minutes. Both Chris Bangura and Leon Archer going close when positioned superbly to score.

After this the Wings started to get going and the large Welling contingent where starting to find their voices behind Jamie Turner's goal. The match was fast becoming a scrappy affair with the game being played very much in the middle of the park.

The deadlock was finally broken on the 37th minute through Steve Perkins. A long free kick was played in, which the Boreham defence failed to clear and Perkins punished them by nodding the ball over the line.

Welling didn't have to wait long for the 2nd, 3 minutes into injury time, Boreham Wood defender Mark Smith lost possession to Perkins deep inside his own half. This gave Perkins a clear run on goal and with the keeper committed, Perkins coolly rolled the ball to Pinnock who slotted into the empty net to make it 2-0.

Lew Watts replaced Matt Lee at halftime. Again the 2nd half was a scrappy affair although Welling never looked like conceding.

Boreham Wood were very content with launching balls into the Welling half which Moore and Shearer were comfortably dealing with. Pinnock had a great chance to make it 3-0, he beat the Boreham Wood defenders for pace and raced towards the goal but lost his footing at a crucial time, and Boreham were able to scamper back to clear for a corner.

Chris Moore then rose superbly to head the ball goal wards but keeper Noel Imper magnificently tipped the ball over the bar. The referee moments later brought proceedings to an end, and with it Welling's name added to Mondays' draw.

It was a solid performance from the Wings under the circumstances but Welling's class shone through in the end.
