With Welling on a three game unbeaten run, the Wings were looking to pick up their second away win of the season at Basingstoke Town on Saturday. Boss Adrian Pennock made two changes to the side that beat Sutton 2-1 last weekend. John Guest replaced injured Leon Solomon and returning Martin Carthy took the place of Steve Perkins.

The Wings made the best possible start to the game when just 50 seconds after kick-off they took the lead. Jamie Day's perfect through ball reached Danny Kedwell, who poked the ball through the legs of outcoming keeper Stuart Searle before slotting the ball home.

Just five minutes later and Welling extended their lead. Another pass from Day allowed Kedwell to put over a low cross, which was put into his own net by Joe Dolan under pressure from Martin Carthy.

The visitors continued to look dangerous on the attack and Kedwell could have added to his tally on 22 minutes. A Day free-kick found Kedwell unmarked in the six-yard box but the Wings top scorer headed straight at Searle.

However, the Welling hitman wouldn't have to wait long for his second of the afternoon. Carthy headed the ball down for Kedwell who ran across the box before hitting a rather weak shot past the Dragons keeper into the bottom corner. This latest brace is his third of the season and making him the second highest goal scorer in the league with an impressive 8.

Five minutes before the break Wings defender Ben Lewis was unlucky not to have scored his first for his new club. Day's corner was swung in and met by Lewis who headed the set-piece against the bar.

Basingstoke had a large penalty appeal turned down towards the end of the half but overall the homeside were by far the second best team on the pitch.

Nevertheless, the second half would be a complete reversal with the Dragons dominating play. Basingstoke were rewarded with a consolation goal on 65 minutes through James Taylor. Some poor defending allowed Taylor to slide the ball past keeper Jamie Turner for his fourth of the season.

Despite controlling possession for the majority of the half, the Dragons were unable to convert on several good scoring opportunities. Wings keeper Turner made a couple of very good saves to deny the homeside and frustrate Basingstoke Manager Francis Vines even more.

The creative and industrious Day nearly got himself on the score sheet minutes from time. Searle tipped his free-kick over the bar before the final whistle and a deserved victory for the Wings.

Welling visit Folkestone Invicta next Saturday in the FA Cup Second Round Qualifying.

Come on you Wings!
