Adrian Pennock was without both Danny Kedwell (ill) and Matt Carruthers (suspended) for the first of a double header with Basingstoke Town. Matt Bodkin replaced Kedwell whilst Steve Perkins started for the first time since late October, replacing Carruthers.
The thick fog made it extremely hard to see for both sets of fans and players, however, Basingstoke coped better with the conditions, scoring two goals within ten minutes of the kick-off. A right-wing corner was headed home by James Taylor to put the Stoke one up. Further problems arose minutes later when the head of Ben Surey met an identical corner to their first goal to double Stoke's lead.
It took the Wings 20 minutes to find a reply. A Jamie Day free kick was just about headed home by Lee Shearer. Luckily for the Wings the Stoke defence were inches short of clearing the ball off the line.
Second half and the Wings were in total control. Steve Perkins went close after heading just over the bar, but minutes later and Welling were level. A Jamie Day left-wing corner was only half-cleared and Che Stadhart seized upon the loose ball to draw the Wings level.
Stadhart could have won the game for the Wings, but his late header was directed straight at Basingstoke keeper Rob Bullivant, Matt Bodkin also had further chances to win the game.
The Wings will be disappointed with only the one point after missing an abundance of chances and conceding two goals so early on. Welling return to Basingstoke on Saturday for an FA Trophy third qualifying round tie.
