Welling United progressed into the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round with a 3-1 victory over AFC Hornchurch in the replay on Wednesday evening. Two late goals for the Wings confirmed the next round tie with Clevedon Town.

The visitors gave Welling an early scare just minutes into the game. The move saw some intricate passing, which found Kris Lee unmarked inside the box, but the former Thurrock man dragged wide.

However, the Wings took the lead just minutes later. Jamie Day's corner was met by the head of Martin Carthy who powered the ball home past Dale Brightley.

Despite being behind, AFC Hornchurch continued to attack. Yet poor finishing in front of goal gave Wings keeper Jamie Turner very little to do.

Top-scorer Danny Kedwell had two chances to double his side’s lead in the first period. 24 minutes into the game Day's corner found Kedwell who headed wide. 12 minutes later Kedwell turned the Urchins defence inside out and fired just past the near post.

The homeside should have had a penalty 5 minutes before the break when Matt Bodkin was clearly fouled inside the area. Yet the referee played the advantage but disappointingly nothing materialised from the next phase of play.

The second half saw AFC Hornchurch continue to press forward pushing the Wings defence deeper and deeper. Simon Parker went close to drawing the Urchins level when he smashed his right-footed drive just inches wide of the post. Jim McFarlane then headed straight at Wings keeper Turner for an easy save.

With the Wings soaking up the pressure Welling went in search of a second. Just after the hour mark a long ball over the Urchins defence found Kedwell who under pressure from Ronnie Fletcher hit his shot over the bar.

AFC Hornchurch were rewarded for their pressure on 77 minutes. John Guest's clumsy challenge gifted the Urchins a penalty and Mark Janney made no mistake from the spot.
Nevertheless, the Urchins celebrations would be short lived as just two minutes later Che Stadhart regained the lead for the Wings. Matt Bodkin's left-wing cross-found Stadhart who volleyed home much to the home crowds delight.

More excitement would follow for the Wings when on fulltime substitute Des Boateng scored an exquisite goal from the edge of the box into the top corner. The goal wrapped up an excellent game of football and a match many will remember for along time.

Back to league action on Saturday when Welling welcome Bedford Town to Park View Road.

Come on you Wings!
