Welling United were left wondering how they allowed AFC Hornchurch to secure a replay after the Wings missed a number of first half opportunities to wrap the game up by halftime.

With injuries to Leon Solomon and Mark Goodfellow reducing Welling’s options at the back, Wings Boss Adrian Pennock was forced into making several changes to his side. Steve Perkins and Martin Carthy replaced Leon Solomon and Des Boateng in a rejigged Wings line-up.

Welling were in total control for the first 20 minutes and will be kicking themselves for allowing the Urchins back into the game. Chances for Martin Carthy and Danny Kedwell in the first few minutes were a sign of the Wings early dominance.

Welling went close to taking the lead on 11 minutes, when a Wings free-kick was cleared as far as Ellis Green who fired his shot against the bar. Five minutes later Kedwell's shot on the edge of the box was deflected just wide before Matt Bodkin's cross found Carthy who headed just over from close range.

However, the Conference South side would not have to wait long before taking a deserved lead. Urchins’ defender Ronnie Fletcher failed to clear Jamie Day's left-wing corner off the line with the former Thurrock player getting the last touch before just rolling over for a goal.

Che Stadhart had a good chance to double his sides lead just before the break when the striker turned on the ball and hit his shot forcing Dale Brightley into a fine save.

Wings keeper Jamie Turner had very little to deal with in the first half, with the homeside creating very little upfront. Nevertheless, this would all change in the second period, with AFC Hornchurch having the better of the play.

The Ryman League Division One North side equalised just five minutes after the restart. Jamie Turner could only parry Kris Lee’s powered shot into the path of Mark Jannie who at the second attempt put the ball home.

A minute later Turner made a magnificent save to deny Kris Lee and AFC Hornchurch the lead.

The Wings regrouped after the hour mark and came agonisingly close to securing a place in the next round. On 66 minutes Che Stadhart's low strike flashed frustratingly wide. End to end action saw Urchins striker Simon Parker fire his shot wide before man of the Match Matt Bodkin then saw his 25-yard drive fly just inches over the bar.

Welling now welcome AFC Hornchurch for the replay on Wednesday evening at Park View Road.

Come on you Wings!
